Curriculum Specialist, Math


Position Summary

Support mathematics teachers at New Visions schools in aligning teaching, learning and formative assessment with Commone Core Learning Standards in Mathematics. Through a collaborative inquiry process, guide teachers in a continuous cycle of implementing effective tasks for students, looking at resulting student work to identify achieved learning and knowledge/skill gaps, and revising and creating new lessons to address those gaps by re-engaging students in math content and practices as needed.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet weekly with school-based teams in up to five New Visions high schools to establish and maintain a collaborative inquiry process that will:
    • Implement effective learning experiences for students, aligned with CCLS and embedding regular formative assessment into student learning.
    • Facilitate planning for implementation of two Formative Assessment Lessons per quarter and quarterly administration of a MARS assessment.
    • Facilitate looking at student work on embedded formative assessments to improve teaching lessons, inform future lessons and identify areas for re-engaging students in content and practices.
    • Assist teachers in developing their listening, questioning and feedback skills.
    • Sustain the math teacher teams in an inquiry process within and across schools to continuously use information gleaned from student work to improve instruction and meet student needs.
  • Meet weekly with colleagues to establish and maintain a collaborative inquiry process that will reflect on the teacher teams’ progress as evidenced by student work and revise and plan new interventions and supports to move teachers’ pedagogical practice forward.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating of cross-school inquiry.

Education and Experience

  • Masters-level degree.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in teaching math in urban public schools at the secondary level.

Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base

  • Deep knowledge of math content and pedagogy at the secondary school level.
  • Experience with collaborative inquiry, particularly using student work to inform instructional decisions.
  • Skills related to the design and implementation of effective learning experiences and formative assessments in secondary mathematics.
  • Evidence of leadership at the school level.
  • Experience coaching and supporting other teachers.
  • Excellent written, oral, organizational, and inter-personal skills including strong facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively.
  • Experience with standards-driven school reform.
