Curriculum Specialist, Science
Position Summary
In collaboration with teacher teams and NV staff, produce inquiry-based curriculum in biology, chemistry, physics and other science courses that engage and support students in the development of their literacy strategies, thinking skills and science content knowledge. Work closely with teachers to build their capacity to use these curricular materials effectively and to independently produce their own.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Meet regularly with school based teams in up to four PSO schools (Depeartment of Education schools) up to half a day every other week to:
- Lead the development of curriculum modules using the Literacy Design Collaborative framework embedding the teaching of reading and writing in the acquistion of content knowledge in science
- Support the implemendation of these modules in participating teachers' classrooms
- Support teacher teams in analyzing their practice and working collaboratively
- Foster teachers visiting each others' classrooms within the school
Develop inquiry-based curriculum for New Visions charter high schools including:
- Creating unit plans including student activities, labs and supporting materials, and Literacy Design Collaborative modules
- Supporting teachers in creating daily lesson plans from the unit plans
- Supporting the implementation of the curriculum in charter teachers' classrooms
- Working collaboratively with teachers in a "lesson study" fashion to develop and improve lessons that meet the needs of their students
Work with other New Visions staff to:
- Undestand and monitor the implementation of these modules and units
- Analyze performance data based on collected student work to adapt curricular units as well as to identify instructional areas for improvement
- Promote cross-unit learning within New Visions (Charter ←→ PSO ←→ Certification)
- Plan, implement and facilitate professional development for colleagues
- Explore electronic platforms and virtual learning opportunities that promote and support this type of curriculum and learning.
Regularly use and promote the use of our Salesforce platform to establish goals, set targets and document the progress of the work, build and sustain learning communities and share promising practices and knowledge.
Education and Experience
- Masters-level degree
- Minimum of ten years of experience in public education, preferably urban schools and secondary level
Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base
- Expert knowledge of one or more science core content areas at the secondary school level
- Experience designing and implementing curriculum
- Skills related to the design, implementation, and assessment of effective secondary curricula
- Leadership in providing professional development and supports to educators
- Experience with teaching reading and writing skills to secondary school students, particularly in science
- Demonstrated experience with inquiry based teaching, experiential learning and connecting content to real work applications
- Planning and conducting research on teaching and learning including building and implementing a research design, data gathering, and analysis
- Excellent written, oral, organizational, and inter-personal skills including strong facilitation skills
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively
- Experience with standards-driven school reform
