Benefits and Commitments


Resident Benefits

  • Residents earn a Master’s degree in science, math, or special education in adolescent education from Hunter College, City University of New York.
  • After the successful completion of the Residency, Residents will be eligible to apply for New York State Teacher Certification.
  • During the 14 months of the Residency, Residents are awarded a $22,500 stipend and are not asked to contribute towards the cost of tuition for the program.
  • After their successful completion of the Residency, Residents will be guaranteed the opportunity to teach at New Visions-supported New York City public schools.
  • Because they will be entering the teaching force with their Master’s degree, Residents will begin work paid at the first differential on the salary scale-- $51,425 according to the 2008 scale.

Resident Financial Commitments

During their first two years of full-time teaching, Residents are asked to contribute $5,500 towards paying back a portion of the program costs.

During the 14 months of the Residency, Residents will be responsible for some incidental expenses: the cost of books for their Hunter College courses, registration fees for two state-mandated standardized teacher assessments ($88 each), Department of Education fingerprinting ($110), required DOE Anti-Violence workshops ($75), and the Hunter College application fee ($125).

Resident Participation Commitments

Residents commit to full participation in the residency for 14 months and to four years of teaching in New York City public schools after the successful completion of the residency.

Full participation in the residency includes a coursework component and a host-school component.

  1. Coursework
    Residents agree to complete all coursework and graduation requirements for the master’s degree at Hunter College, including participation in all required assessments and completion of a final portfolio and defense of learning presentation. Residents must also pass the LAST and CST New York state teacher exams by the end of the first summer of the program.   2. Host School

   During work at the host school, residents agree to:

  • Engage fully in all aspects of serving their students and learning to become excellent teachers
  • Take primary responsibility for teaching one section from the mentor’s course assignments (possibly expanded to two sections during the spring semester)
  • Work collaboratively with the mentor to plan curriculum, assessment and instructional strategies for the course and work toward professional development goals
  • Communicate with mentor, program director and Hunter College faculty in regular formal and informal meetings
  • Attend faculty and team meetings at the school
  • Take responsibility for student grading and assessment
  • Participate in biweekly reflective seminars with peers and mentors
  • Contribute to evaluations of self, peers and larger program
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and be a positive contributor to the school community.
