Selection Criteria


In order to be eligible for the program and to meet the minimum admissions qualifications, applicants must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, or a general liberal arts degree for special education or sufficient undergraduate credit in one of these three areas, subject to approval by Hunter College. In some cases, we will accept students who did not major in the required area but have completed sufficient coursework.
  • Have U.S. citizenship or valid permanent residency (green card)
  • Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate leadership ability
  • Believe that it is a teacher’s responsibility to address all students’ learning needs and that all students can learn
  • Demonstrate a commitment to educational equity
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal responsibility and maturity
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively, reflect critically on his or her own work, respond constructively to feedback, respond persistently to challenges, succeed in a complex environment with multiple roles and work effectively in a diverse community.
  • Not have taken more than 18 college credits in teacher education courses
  • Not be a certified teacher or have worked as a regular, full-time teacher in a New York City public school at any time since September 2002.
