Chancellor Black: Please Consider This

  • Residents are placed in New Visions schools that have committed to the idea that teacher preparation and induction are integral to their ongoing improvement.
  • Each host school will have a cohort of residents and mentors to collaborate with and support one another.
  • UTR mentors are excellent teachers, identified by their school leaders, who volunteer and are trained to participate in the program. Mentor schedules include time for mentoring and integrating the resident into the school community.
  • Residents spend a full year working with a trained mentor teacher in the mentor’s classroom.
  • From the first day of school, residents — working with their mentors — are responsible for one class of students.
  • Residents plan curriculum, instruction and assessment collaboratively with their mentors.
  • At each school, the resident and mentor cohort will participate in the Reflective Seminar, a biweekly gathering designed to build a reflective professional community.
  • Residents participate in team meetings, observation of other classrooms, parent conferences and all other teacher activities at the school.
