Application Information

Eligibility

To be considered, applicants for summer 2012 must:

• Teach in a 9th through 12th-grade classroom.
• Have a minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience by June 2012.
• Spend at least 50 percent of a full-time position in the classroom. Math coaches, literacy coaches and librarians who are engaged in classroom instruction 50 percent of the time are eligible.
• Commit to teaching in the NYC public school system for the 2012–13 school year, following completion of the project.

Teachers may be awarded an FFT fellowship once every five years.

Applicants must apply online at www.fundforteachers.org. The application deadline for summer 2012 fellowships is Wednesday, February 29.

Application Description

The online application has four sections that must be completed by the applicant(s):

• Profile of the applicant(s) and the applicant’s school on the cover sheet
• Proposal outlining project or activities
• Draft of curricular unit or action plan
• Itemized budget detailing the anticipated costs by category.
• A screencast, video or audio slideshow submission demonstrating a Common Core standards-aligned curricular unit in a New York State Regents subject area to the Fund for Teachers - YouPD Challenge.

Applicants are asked to address the following questions in their proposals:

Fellowship rationale and purpose: What would you like to learn from your teaching practice? What are the key questions you want to explore? What challenge or passion inspires your proposed fellowship?

Project description: Describe and outline in detail your proposed fellowship. What key activities will you pursue, and why are they important? What is the time frame for achieving the goals outlined in the rationale and purpose?

Teacher growth and learning: How will your fellowship help you address your key questions and/or learning goals? How will this fellowship help you grow as a teacher?

Student growth and learning: How will students benefit from your proposed fellowship? What meaningful additions will this experience bring to your classroom?

Benefits to school community: How will your fellowship experience contribute to your school community’s efforts to engage students and improve learning? How will you share the fellowship learning with colleagues?

Implementation of fellowship learning: Please outline a curricular unit that will integrate experiences and learning from your proposed fellowship. The outline should demonstrate the strong connection between your fellowship and student learning. Your curricular unit outline may describe a newly created unit or enhancements to an existing unit. Within the space available, focus on clearly showing unit goals, student skills developed, general content covered and teaching methods used.

In a few cases, a curricular unit outline might not be the best evidence of the strong connection between fellowship learning and student learning. For example, a fellowship could result in improved leadership skills or the development of work in student advisory classes, larger departmental programs or extracurricular programs. If this is the case, please create an action plan that outlines a strategy for implementing these programs or the newly acquired skills.

Budget narrative: Provide a brief narrative showing evidence of thoughtful planning and research into your specific itinerary. The narrative should explain the rationale for the project’s expenses.
