New Visions’ networks of guidance counselors convene monthly throughout the school year to improve their understanding of college and career opportunities, develop schools’ systems for sharing and tracking information, and learn new methods for engaging the entire school community in supporting college and career readiness. The 12th-Grade Network helps counselors support seniors through the nuts and bolts of the college and career application process. The Ninth-Grade Network focuses on developing early college awareness, building a college-going culture, and engaging students and parents in the college and career access process. Network topics include:
College Applications and Financial Aid
Network sessions for 12th-grade counselors focus on supporting students in applying to college and working with school leaders, teachers and parents to embed the application process in larger school systems. Network sessions also provide tools for helping students with college financial planning. They cover such topics as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the scholarship process and financial aid package comparisons.
Postsecondary Options
To help counselors tailor postsecondary supports to students’ needs and interests, network sessions help educate and update counselors around the ever-growing array of options for students upon high school graduation. For example, students might pursue opportunities through two- and four-year colleges, technical and culinary schools, and alternative academic and career-training programs for those who have struggled to graduate from high school.
Early College Awareness
Schools cannot wait until students’ senior year to help them access college and career information and resources. Network sessions for ninth-grade counselors focus on developing an early college awareness program that includes planning college visits for ninth-graders, introducing students to the PSAT, and engaging students and families in understanding college readiness and college access requirements.
The Guidance Counselor Networks are a key component of New Visions’ Citi College Bound Program, work made possible through the generous support of the Citi Foundation. Because of Citi College Bound, New Visions has been able to offer support, tools and resources to guidance counselors — as well as to students and families — to promote the pursuit of postsecondary opportunities.
