OVERVIEW

New Visions For Public Schools' Leadership Coaching Program (LC) plays a vital role in efforts to reform the structure and practices of the public schools through developing strong instructional leadership. In collaboration with the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Leadership Academy, the Leadership Coaching Program currently serves first- and second-year principals throughout the New York City Public School system.

Goals and Objectives

The Leadership Coaching Program establishes a unique professional development opportunity that provides second-year and select first-year principals with continual access to expertise and advice from retired principal mentors. Through regular school visits, and phone and e-mail contact, mentors assess need, build capacity and help develop effective instructional leaders who champion collaborative, supportive and academically rigorous environments focused on student achievement. Mentors’ experience and outside perspective serve as invaluable resources for principals who must cope with daily challenges while maintaining a focus on their long-term vision of the school.

Developing effective instructional leaders creates exemplary schools which serve as models for other schools across the system. The Leadership Coaching Program achieves this by:

> connecting new principals with retired principals who make regular visits to the principal’s school, assessing needs and building that principal’s capacity to be a more effective instructional leader;
> providing principals with ongoing assessment of their performance that informs their practice and development;
> helping new principals apply the New York City Department of Education’s standards for school leaders;
> supporting other ongoing systemic reform efforts; and
> gradually transitioning principals from mentoring to other sustainable support systems.
