Data Visualization Specialist

SUMMARY

The mission of New Visions’ Data Analytics unit is to support New Visions as a high performing organization by providing accurate and timely information related to New Visions’ goal of disrupting poverty by creating and sustaining a network of high performing schools.  We deliver accurate and accessible data reporting and analysis for New Visions’ Affinity Network, Charter Management Organization, Talent Development Programs, internal departments, and the NYC Community Schools Initiative. 

The Data Visualization Specialist plays a key role in ensuring that stakeholders within the New Visions network of district and charter schools have access to the right data to support critical decisions at key points of the school year.  The Specialist designs and manages the ecosystem of data dashboards and other data tools for internal and external audiences; contributes to key technical and data infrastructure to ensure accurate data and secure access; and supports internal and external capacity building efforts around the use of data systems and tools.  The Specialist works collaboratively with staff across all departments to ensure that New Visions’ data tools are responsive to needs and priorities across the organization and within New Visions’ network of schools by collecting ongoing feedback, seeking out opportunities to align work across the organization to leverage impact, and providing support for staff internally and externally in using data tools to inform decisions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Create and maintain ecosystem of data dashboards to facilitate understanding of student performance and to monitor key organizational initiatives

  • Create, maintain, and iteratively refine suite of comparative, exploratory data visualizations to help key stakeholders to understand and explore data
  • Create and maintain documentation of data visualization tools
  • Support the technical infrastructure to create and maintain a reliable connection between the New Visions data warehouse, automated overnight processing, and Tableau Server.
  • Create and implement systems for assuring data quality and accuracy.

Collaborate with internal and external colleagues to infuse New Visions tools, structures and strategies with a data-driven approach

  • Collaborate with data users to understand their needs and build tools and analyses to support them.
  • Develop mechanisms for collecting feedback and modifying analyses and data tools to reflect internal and external data priorities
  • Support training of internal and external staff on using dashboards to understand and monitor their work
  • Support schools and network leaders in analyzing data within tools to make evidence-based decisions

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in public administration, public policy, education, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology, or related social science field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience providing project support within a comparable setting or in the field of education, including experience in creating data visualizations to support education stakeholders
  • Experience working in public schools desirable – public high schools preferred, and/or experience working in education administration.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of Tableau required
  • Knowledge of R, Apps Script, d3, Javascript, and/or SQL desired
  • Advanced PC skills (including thorough knowledge of Google Apps and Excel)
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent writing, presentation and facilitation skills
  • Collaborative and team-oriented with a strong attention to detail.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Demonstrated persistence and independence in learning technical subject matter, and in and solving technical problems.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of DOE source data systems (HSST/STARS, ATS, etc) desired
  • Demonstrated interest in public education essential
