Become a Teacher in New York City
Students in New York City's schools deserve the best: well-prepared, knowledgeable, caring teachers whose focus is on helping all students achieve.
Today, nearly 33 percent of New York City teachers leave the profession before completing their third year of teaching, though studies show that teachers are most effective after those crucial first years. Most teachers who leave the profession cite a lack of support and adequate preparation for the challenges they face.
In response to this challenge, New Visions for Public Schools and Hunter College offer new models for teacher certification that provide teachers with both experience and expertise: the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) and the Math and Science Teacher Residency (MASTER).
Why a Teacher Residency?
The Urban Teacher Residency and Math and Science Teacher Residency are programs for professionals at all stages of their careers (from recent college graduates to experienced professionals looking to change careers) and diverse backgrounds who are committed to improving student achievement by teaching in New York City public schools.
Our teacher residency programs provide the tools necessary to become successful teachers by combining teaching experience and rigorous graduate study that is aligned with experiences in the classroom. Residents spend their first year of practice working full time as a member of the faculty in a NYC high-need school, alongside an experienced mentor teacher. Through intensive support from their mentors, New Visions program staff and Hunter faculty, residents reflect on their daily classroom practice and have the input of instructional experts to build a toolbox of teaching strategies.
Successful completion of UTR and MASTER Teacher Residency programs earns you:
- New York City Initial Teaching Certification (grades 7-12)
- Master of Arts degree in adolescent education from Hunter College
- Subsidized and deferred master’s degree tuition
- Support in job placement within New Visions' network of 76 public schools
- Ongoing career support and professional development
The Urban Teacher Residency will be preparing 40 residents in English and Special Education.
The Math and Science Teacher Residency will be preparing 25 residents in Science (Earth Science, Chemistry and Biology) and Math.
