Why a Teacher Residency?
The New Visions/Hunter College Urban Teacher Residency is a program for professionals at all stages of their careers (from recent college graduates to experienced professionals looking to change careers) and diverse backgrounds who are committed to improving student achievement by teaching in New York City public schools.
Our teacher residency programs provide the tools necessary to become successful teachers by combining teaching experience and rigorous graduate study that is aligned with experiences in the classroom. Residents spend their first year of practice working full time as a member of the faculty in a NYC high-need school, alongside an experienced mentor teacher. Through intensive support from their mentors, New Visions program staff and Hunter faculty, residents reflect on their daily classroom practice and have the input of instructional experts to build a toolbox of teaching strategies.
Successful completion of the Urban Teacher Residency earns you:
- New York City Initial Teaching Certification (grades 7-12)
- Master of Arts degree in adolescent education from Hunter College
- Subsidized and deferred master’s degree tuition
- Support in job placement within New Visions' network of 76 public schools
- Ongoing career support and professional development
