TRANSFORMATION OF EXISTING CAMPUS
BUILDINGS
Almost all New Century High Schools are located
within 19 campus buildings. These campuses, originally
designed to house one larger high school, are now
shared by multiple schools. This school-within-a-school
model presents multiple challenges, such as sharing
resources while honoring each partner’s autonomy;
establishing each school’s territory and identity
while students need to circulate through the entire
school building. To define the needs for all the constituencies
in a building, New Visions has helped design a consultative
process that engages principals, teachers, students,
and community partners, as well as representatives
from the DOE and School Construction Authority in:
| > |
master planning the use of space and identifying
needed construction work to support the small schools
in the campus; |
| > |
creating a system of visual identity for campus
buildings that establishes an identity system for
the campus and the small schools housed within it
and demarcates space and provides the building with
a way-finding system; and |
| > |
developing standards for new school construction,
room design, and furniture layout that recognize
emerging small school practices yet allow for customization
to meet individual schools’ unique instructional
needs.
