NEW CAPACITY STRATEGIES

In addition to strategies to accommodate the needs of small school campuses, there is an urgent need to create additional capacity in the form of new buildings to accommodate demographic growth, particularly acute on the high school level. Population growth contributes to continuing seat need, particularly acute at the high school level and for certain demographics throughout the City.

In collaboration with the Department of Education and the School Construction Authority, New Visions is developing a Not-for-Profit Leasing Program that allows non-profit organizations focused on housing, community development, or economic development, to build or rehabilitate existing properties for the purpose of developing new schools as part of mixed-use development. These organizations, as part of their core mission, are interested in developing small schools themselves or in collaboration with other community organizations. This process allows for a deepening of the partner-school relationship, strengthening of linkages to the surrounding community, and introduction of innovative design.

Four tenets of this NFP Leasing Program include:

> Participatory design processes with community and educators
> Creating the school building as a community asset
> Re-imagining linkages between themed schools and partners in the building
> An opportunity to explore the possibility for time and cost efficiencies

This presentation provides a brief overview of the model and pipeline of projects.
