Overview
National research demonstrates that strong library
media centers improve student achievement. New Visions’
Libraries Program helps schools develop vibrant, resource-rich
libraries and implement programs that support student
success. Supported through a generous endowment from
the Astor Center for Public School Libraries, the
program works throughout the New York City public
schools to help educators recreate their libraries
into technology rich information access points, develop
curricula and programs that spark inquiry, empower
young people, and provide students with essential
literacy skills.

Goals and Objectives
New Visions sees re-envisioning the school library as a
key strategy by which schools strengthen instruction,
provide technology rich information access, develop
innovative curricula and build a school-wide culture
of literacy. The Libraries and Literacy Program helps
both individual schools and the school system itself
undertake this work by:
|
| > |
Fostering collaborations that enable educators
to create effective libraries and approaches to
literacy as part of an academically rigorous program.
|
| > |
Providing professional
development that helps school leaders, teachers
and librarians build strong technology-rich library
collections and integrate information literacy
and independent learning skills into classroom
learning.
|
| > |
Helping schools identify
good information resources and envision their
libraries not simply as collections of books,
but as dynamic hubs of information access, literacy,
and inquiry that support the success of both students
and adults. |
