Student Engagement Strategies

The G2G campaign strives to engage students around the concept of college readiness and excite them about their prospects. It is using a variety of strategies, from social networking to a talent competition. Among the initiatives launched so far:

  • G2G Web site: In early March, we launched the official Good to Go site at www.nycg2g.com. The site is a valuable and robust resource for students, educators and families to learn about what they can do to help New York City students graduate high school prepared for success in college or career. It includes a blog written by students at two schools on the journey to college, a social networking component, and several student-produced videos on college readiness.
  • Good to Go Leadereship Corps: Leadership Corps members are students, ages 15 to 18, chosen to be the face and voice of G2G on their campus. They are a team of students who will combine their passion, imagination, intellect and communication skills to help motivate their peers to graduate college and career ready. They will take ownership for, and help change, the culture in their neighborhoods and schools to one where graduation and college is not only possible, but is the primary goal.
  • Talent competition: For the past two years we have invited students from each of our high schools to compete for cash prizes by using video, art, essay, skit, song or dance to express what G2G means to them, their school or their family. Click here to view the winners from this year, or visit www.nycg2g.com.

  • Facebook/MySpace quiz and raffle: We developed an “RU G2G?” quiz for each grade level that we posted on G2G Facebook. We gave away movie gift certificates to the first 100 students who friended "GoodtoGo Campaign." Students who friended G2G and took the quiz for their grade level were entered into a raffle to win one of five $100 cash prizes.

  • Posters and brochures: We raised student curiosity last fall with black posters asking in white lettering, "RU G2G?" Those were followed by the first set of bold, colorful posters and brochures on attendance, grade-level benchmarks, college access and the importance of ninth grade. A few months later, we followed up with a second set of posters and brochures covering the Regents exams, credit accumulation, parent involvement and the benefits of getting to know your guidance counselor. Additional sets will be developed throughout the year.

  • T-shirts and giveaways: Black and white G2G T-shirts have been a hit among New Visions staff and students.
