Soca Girls Rock

1000 Smiles Project

On February 7, 2018, 12-15 Girls for Gender Equity participants created decorative and motivational posters for the Soca Girls Rock! 1000 Smiles Project.. These posters now decorate UNICEF tents in Dominica

The 1000 Smiles Project sprouted after Hurricane Maria destroyed nearly 90% of Dominica. This project provides creative spaces for children and youth to socialize and receive extra academic support as they recover socially and emotionally from the toll of the storm.

Countries Represented: GGE participants who created the posters represent the following countries: Barbados, China, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.

Quotes:
“I liked doing the posters because the idea that a group collage would be used to decorate a tent in a country devastated by a hurricane shows that something small can make a difference.” Dylan (AMS III)

“I thought it was really fun finding random images to represent hope for kids less fortunate.” Shane (AMS III)

“Making the posters felt great knowing that I am able to make many kids happy.”
Otnel (AMS III)

“My thoughts are the project was that it was a cool way to spread cheer. Also, it was inspiring knowing something so small could make a difference.”
Shawnalese (AMS III)

“I was happy about making the poster. It was great seeing their smiles on the video. I don't care if no one likes the creativity but what I care about is that the kids learn something that can help them motivate themselves and each other no matter the issues/conflicts they are facing or going to face.”
Eman (AMS III)

“It was fun to create a poster that would help inspire students. It was fulfilling to help those impacted by Hurricane Maria.”

Samuel (AMS III)

“I found it to be an interesting experience. The children went through a lot. I hope the posters can at least inspire them to keep moving forward.”
Lorenzo (AMS III)

“It felt good to use my creativity on something positive and uplifting for the kids in Dominica that had to suffer through Hurricane Maria.”
