Data Analyst

Summary 

The mission of New Visions’ Data Analytics’ unit is to support New Visions as a high performing organization by providing accurate and timely information related to New Vision’s intended impact of disrupting poverty by creating and sustaining a network of high performing schools.  The Data Analytics unit delivers accurate and accessible data reporting for the NYC Community Schools Initiative as well as New Visions’ Affinity Network, Charter Management Organization, Talent Development Programs and New Visions’ internal functions.  The Data Analyst conducts analyses, processes large data sets, builds data management infrastructure, and creates Google tools and Tableau dashboards for use by New Visions staff, NYCDOE (New York City Department of Education) and community school personnel. The Data Analyst plays a pivotal role in making the right data available quickly to all necessary community school parties.

Essential Job Functions 

Analyze​ and Present Data 

Conduct analysis related to the community schools initiative
Build our data infrastructure to facilitate analysis of academic and non-academic data

Process large data sets and make them accessible to a wide audience

Create cross-sectional and longitudinal data sets from raw data files
Support the integration of community school variables into New Visions data warehouse and data tools.

Create online dashboards to facilitate understanding of student performance

Create and maintain Tableau dashboards
Design and implement a strategy for sharing data within the organization and broader network
Provide training and support to internal and external staff on using Tableau to explore school and student performance

Build User Capacity

Support New Visions staff, key NYCDOE staff and community school staff in using data tools
Host webinars, meetings and convenings with school staff to support tool adoption
Work directly with a subset of schools to support leaders’ programming and student intervention decisions

Develop data management infrastructure

Work in Google Apps Script to support implementation and maintenance of Google tools
Contribute to maintaining and automating procedures within New Visions’ internal data warehouse

Interacts with: Director of Community schools, community school facilitators, New Visions staff at all levels

Required Education and Experience

Masters degree in public administration, public policy, education, statistics, economics, psychology, sociology, data science, or related social science field.
Experience working in public schools desirable – public high schools preferred, and/or experience working in education administration.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Experience conducting data analyses and presenting results to diverse audiences required.
Strong presentation skills required: highly experienced and/or comfortable presenting and facilitating information to large audiences.
Highly proficient with spreadsheets and Google Apps.
Knowledge of statistical packages (STATA, R, SPSS, SAS) required.
Knowledge of Google Apps Script, SQL, Javascript and Python desired.
Knowledge of Tableau desired.
Knowledge of NYCDOE source data systems (HSST/STARS, ATS, , etc) desired.
Knowledge of NYCDOE and NCLB Accountability desired.
Knowledge of the public school structure and policies desired.
Ability to conduct descriptive analyses and to present results in a variety of written and visual formats.
Ability to analyze and use student data to shape instruction.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Experience working on an effective team.
Position will require local travel throughout New York City.
