Transforming Education to Career Pathway Advising: New Visions Launching Expanded Directory and Resources in May

PRESS RELEASE

New York, NY – New Visions for Public Schools, a pioneer in educational innovation and systems-building, is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of the revamped New Visions Career Directory, slated for May 2024, and generously funded by a grant from The Heckscher Foundation for Children. This comprehensive resource is designed to empower postsecondary counselors who work with students and families by providing them a dynamic platform to explore a wide array of opportunities beyond traditional college pathways.

In response to the evolving landscape of postsecondary education, New Visions has spearheaded the redevelopment of an innovative tool that goes beyond the conventional college-centric approach. The original Directory, created during the pandemic and seeded through the Transfer to Career (T2C) initiative with JobsFirst NYC, sees an average of 300+ users per month. The redeveloped New Visions Career Directory is poised to become an invaluable asset for educators, students, and families seeking information about postsecondary options, programs, events, scholarships, and more.

Key Features of the New Visions Career Directory:

  1. Diverse Opportunities: The directory is a one-stop-shop for discovering a diverse range of postsecondary opportunities, including vocational programs, apprenticeships, certifications, and pathways into city employment.

  2. Comprehensive Program Information: Users can access detailed information about various programs, ensuring a well-informed decision-making process for students exploring different paths beyond traditional academia. The directory will also provide materials that support students in their program research, helping them understand what are the key distinguishers of a “best fit” program.

  3. Educator and Counselor Postsecondary Support: School staff will be connected with an existing suite of resources to support their work including partnership development guides, curriculum that supports postsecondary research, and postsecondary transition guides.

  4. User-Friendly Interface: The revamped directory will boast an intuitive and user-friendly interface, ensuring that educators, students, and families can navigate the platform effortlessly and identify programs that meet their needs

New Visions is committed to building school capacity for postsecondary advisory work, recognizing the need for comprehensive resources that cater to students interested in a wide range of options. As a leader in this crucial space, New Visions is filling a gap in the market, providing a tool that will support counselors in setting all students up on a pathway to career success.

“We believe that every student deserves access to information that empowers them to make informed decisions about their future and counselors play an important role in helping students navigate their postsecondary pathways,” said Jennie Soler-McIntosh, VP of Community Engagement and Postsecondary Pathways. “The New Visions Career Directory is a game-changer in the field of postsecondary guidance, offering a wealth of opportunities that allow counselors and school staff to support  students as they explore pathways that align with their individual interests and goals.”

“Through the Transfer 2 Career Collaborative, JobsFirstNYC and New Visions for Public Schools uncovered the high need that students and school staff had for career pathways resources,” said Amanda B. Rosenblum, Vice President, Education, Research and Impact for JobsFirstNYC. “Specifically, a directory that could enable students to learn about, select, and connect to high-quality postsecondary training and education leading to economic mobility. Since the start of the T2C initiative, we are proud to say that there has been a sea change in New York City with respect to building career pathways in schools. The Career Directory has proved valuable city-wide in expanding access to career pathways that inspire our young people and enrich their postsecondary choices.”

The official launch of the New Visions Career Directory is scheduled for May 2024. Educators, community based organizations, and career training programs are encouraged to stay tuned for the groundbreaking redevelopment of this resource that will redefine postsecondary guidance.
