Professional Learning Programs

Astor Center for Public School Libraries

The Astor Center for Public School Libraries at New Visions champions librarians and school libraries in schools across New York City. Established in 1997 by a grant from the Vincent Astor Foundation to New Visions for Public Schools, the Astor Center is dedicated to improving New York City’s school libraries and supporting professional growth among the city’s school librarians.

B-SEAL

Building Secondary Educator and Administrator Leadership (B-SEAL) for Multilingual Learners is an 18-month certification program that provides teachers with a unique opportunity to earn either a New York State certification in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or a Bilingual Extension, at almost no out-of-pocket cost to participants.

High School Literacy

When it comes to literacy, we believe that high school is not too late. New Visions has developed a successful approach that ensures all students learn to read, even if they enter high school as non readers, through attentive use of data and implementation of high-quality intervention curriculum.

Physics Curriculum

In 2019, New Visions partnered with STEMteachersNYC, an established, teacher-led community of educators based in NYC, to develop a series of open-access, models-based physics units. While we have not continued to develop these materials, we provide access to them here for anyone to use.

Social Studies Curriculum Adoption and Implementation

Teaching Social Studies is more challenging and important than ever, and New Visions is committed to ensuring teachers have access to high-quality, comprehensive materials for teaching high school courses. Our materials are widely used in NY State and across the country, and we provide professional learning to support successful, thoughtful use of these materials.

Teacher to Librarian (T2L) Second Certificate Initiative

The Teacher 2 Librarian (T2L) Program enables certified classroom teachers to gain their M.S. in Library and Information Science, complete the course requirements to attain New York State certification as a PreK-12 school library media specialist, and take a position as a certified school librarian in the NYC Public Schools.
