- Narrative: In this four-lesson subunit, learners will investigate the reorganization of peoples and territories in West Asia, especially the current-day territory of Israel and Palestine*, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the expansion of European imperial power in the region, and the displacement and persecution of Jews as a result of the Holocaust. Learners will trace the development of interest groups associated with the region, examine their goals, and explain the roots of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Along the way, learners will develop historical empathy for a variety of perspectives through close-reading of primary source documents and the careful construction of contextual understanding.
