A Letter from the Principal

Dear Prospective Scholars and Families,

New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science (AMS) was founded to prepare its scholars to be college-ready and college-bound. AMS prepares its scholars to think, act and speak with intelligence, integrity and confidence. Our school emphasizes three core values: rigor, the quality of the education our scholars receive; respect, the quality we owe each other and the Bronx neighborhood in which we reside; and responsibility, the quality we owe ourselves to realize our highest potential as scholars and human beings.

To meet these lofty goals, our school model is centered on three core academic pillars:

• The ability to read and write well, which research and our common sense tell us is critical to college success.

• A project-based curriculum that allows students to learn more deeply, not only from the teacher, but by actively solving problems and completing projects that require students to apply their knowledge.

• The support of teachers who work together as a team to enable all students to be ready for college and a career.

At AMS, scholars take four years of math and science coursework. By the time they graduate from the Lower House (9th and 10th grades), scholars will have mastered the Common Core Standards in writing that research has shown is necessary for success in college, careers and beyond. In the Upper House (11th and 12th grades), scholars will be ready for college level academic work and will take rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) classes or courses at nearby colleges.

When our scholars graduate from AMS, they will be well prepared not only for science and mathematics related majors in college, but also for any college major that asks them to be critical thinkers who can collaborate, reason deeply, and articulate their ideas powerfully and clearly.
