Frequently Asked Questions

I filled out an application last year.  Do I need to re-apply?

Yes.  The application process changes yearly to reflect developments in our network, as well as in the teaching profession. As such, all candidates are required to use the more recent version of our application, even if you have filled it out in years past.  If you would like to be considered for teaching positions in our schools for the 2014-2015 school year, please return to TeacherTrack to submit a new application.

How do I become certified in NY State?

In order to become certified in NYS, you must complete all certification requirements as mandated by New York State prior to being placed on payroll within a school. If you have not started this process, please create a profile on their website to be evaluated by the state's certification office (click on the "TEACH Online System" link at the bottom of the page). For more information on whether your credentials qualify you for NYS teaching certification, please contact the NYC Department of Ed Certification Office at (718) 935-4842.

I am certified in another state.  Can I teach in one of your schools?

All teachers in NYC Department of Education schools must hold valid NY state certification. Please note that having a license that qualifies for interstate reciprocity does not make you eligible to teach in NYC public schools. To become eligible, you must contact the NYC Department of Education to apply for a reciprocal license. As long as you have begun this process, you are eligible to submit an application to teach with New Visions; however, you must officially receive a reciprocal license before you can be hired in our schools.

For questions concerning certification, please contact the NYC Department of Education's certification hotline at (718) 935-4842. You can learn more about applying for interstate or international reciprocal certification with New York State here.

I am a Guidance Counselor/Social Worker.  Can I still fill out the application?

Although our application is tailored to classroom teachers, please feel free to apply as a Guidance Counselor or Social Worker.  Please keep in mind that our efforts are geared towards assisting schools with staffing full time teaching positions and we have a very limited number of guidance counselor/social worker positions available.

I am an elementary school teacher.  Can I still fill out the application?

Unfortunately, we do not accept applications for elementary positions; there New Visions network does not currently work with any elementary schools.

As a teacher in a New Visions school, am I a New York City Department of Education employee?

Yes.  With the exception of our charter schools, all of the schools in our network are New York City public schools.  As such, teacher contracts and salaries are the same as those offered by the Department of Education.  You can view more information about DOE salaries here, or call their Human Resources department at (718) 935-4000.

I have completed my application.  When can I expect to hear from New Visions principals?

Due to the unpredictable nature of school vacancies, there is no clear timeline for when you may hear from us. Generally, highly qualified candidates who have completed phone interviews with us are referred out to principals as soon as vacancies arise. If a principal is interested in interviewing you based on your qualifications and preferences, a New Visions staffing specialist or a school hiring representative will reach out to you.  Once you have submitted your application and completed a phone interview, there are no further steps you need to take until you hear from us.

I am unable to submit my application due to an error message.  What do I do?

Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications that we receive, we occasionally experience technological issues. Please try logging back into the application and/or please try accessing the application from another web browser, as some browsers are incompatible with our website. If you are still experiencing problems, please copy and paste (or take a screen shot of) the error message that you receive and e-mail it to teachingjobs@newvisions.org. We will work to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

I have been invited to interview but I do not see any available times.  What can I do?

If you are unable to sign up for an interview, it is likely because all of the events for that week have already been filled.  Please return to the site on Friday morning to sign up for an open event.  We recommend visiting the site in the morning as available times tend to fill very quickly.  Please note, interviews must be scheduled from your TeacherTrack account and you will not be able to sign up for an interview by calling our offices.

I signed up for an interview event but I never received a phone call or I missed my interview.  Can I reschedule?

We apologize that you never received a call. To reschedule your phone interview, login to your TeacherTrack account and register for a time slot that works well for you under the "Events" tab. If you do not see times available today, please check back on Friday morning when new interview events will be posted.  Please also double check that your primary contact phone number is the one on which you would like us to reach you for your interview.

Can international calls can be made for phone interview?

Unfortunately, our interviewing process does not permit us to make international calls. Please check back with us when you can be reached at a U.S. number and we will be happy to schedule an interview.

I cannot get the application to load.  When I click on it, nothing happens.  What's wrong?

Please go to the login page and, before logging in, clear your internet cache by typing Ctrl F5 simultaneously.

Then log in and try clicking on the application link again. Please note that the application can take up to 90 seconds to load, so please give it some time to load after clicking on it.

If you continue to have trouble accessing the application, please give us a call at (646) 486-8220 when you're in front of your computer so we can troubleshoot the issue.

I am trying to fill out my application but I cannot enter a subject area.

If you click on the green arrow to the right of the box, you will see a dropdown menu of all the subject areas.  From there, select your subject area.  If the subject area highlights in green, then it has been successfully selected.

I am an international candidate and I'd like to know if New Visions can sponsor me for a visa.

While we are open to hiring teachers who are not US citizens, we do not have the resources to provide sponsorship for non-US citizen teachers. For sponsorship questions, you can contact the Department of Education at: (718) 935-4000.

What is a CTE license?

CTE stands for Career and Technical Education license. If you do not have a CTE license, please skip that question.

I am currently enrolled in an education program and will eventually be certified. Can I start to teach in your schools since I will soon have my license?

To teach in a NYC public school, you must have current NYS certification. The only exception to this is a Transitional Certificate, which qualifies you to teach while completing an education program.  Please begin our application only if you will be licensed to teach in New York City by August 2013. If you will graduate and receive your license after August 2013, please check back at that point to inquire about mid-year vacancies.
